About the Rainbow Run
In early 2006 the Rainbow Run team, as part of a charity rally, took a much-needed Landrover stuffed with equipment down to The Gambia. On arrival in Banjul the vehicle and all its contents were donated directly to SHINE-Africa - a charity that helps primary school children receive the education they so desperately need.
In 2009 another smaller group decided to return, this time travelling completely unsupported to Banjul and presented the charity with two more Landrovers and equipment, to be used as currency, to help build a crèche in a local teacher training school. This building will enable young mothers to have their children cared for as they train to be the next generation of teachers.
We believe that every child has the right to an education, so we intend to go back to The Gambia with your help. In early 2012 we intend to deliver a bus, another 6 Landrovers and as many supplies as possible to SHINE-Africa in Banjul and we need your help.
We have the vehicles but we need you to fill them with medical supplies, educational equipment, pens, paper, books and toys. We also need your help to get there, so we need petrol money, tools, spare parts and anything else you can think of.

For those of you who do not know who Glynn Jones is, she is the founder, backbone and inspiration behind the whole charity. She identified the need and tried to solve all of the Gambia’s educational needs on her own.
Over the years her role has changed a little, from benefactor, nurse and administrator to teacher and fundraiser. Not to mention all the other hats that she wears in her daily chores. Her name to the Gambians is Mariama or Mother, because that is how they see her.
Just recently she was medivaced home from the Gambia, paralysed and in dire need of medical help. As is her way, no-one was told and she just got on with dealing with it. That is until I got wind of it and asked her to put pen to paper and tell her story.
As you read the story below, make a note of how we are making a difference in the Gambia. Not that it is our intention to ensure that the medical system in the Gambia is modernised for our benefit, but it is nice to know that anyone in need can be helped now.
I am sure you will all join with me in wishing Glynn (and Ian) good wishes and a speedy return to health. The Gambia will miss you if you are not there Mariama.

Many thanks to Stagecoach Bluebird (East Scotland), who have donated to the Rainbow Run a Mercedes 811D coach for us to take to the Gambia. In October 2010, some of the 2012 Rainbow runners went to
Wood Park 4x4 Off-Road driver training centre in Pembrokeshire, Wales. The use of the facilities and instruction were donated to the cause by Richard (Jumbo) James
Team Keating Recovers 'Sid the Sloth'
This is 'Sid the Sloth' being recovered from it's previous home of 2 years in a field behind it's old owner's house. The story goes that the gentleman who used to own this vehicle, a man named Sid, was a well known local character who unfortunately died suddenly and left it sitting in this field. It was kindly donated to the Rainbow Run and will be given some tlc before coming with us to The Gambia.
